Photography Philosophy: Since I am a surfer I like to see sequence photos to see just how the surfer paddles in, makes the bottom turn and works the wave. I try not to edit the sequences too much so the viewer gets the raw version. This gives you the viewer the power to edit as you see fit.

Photo Quality: The pictures you see on the web site are low resolution to make it easier to view on your computer. Purchased photos are Photo-shopped and are crisp clear and of professional quality.

Private Photo Sessions Available: See the Purchasing Pictures page for details.

Central Long Island February 7th, 2010

February 7th Surf Session Summary: Central LI, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 9:00am

Swell was 3.9 feet at 10.0 seconds from the ESE (Bouy 44025). Wind was WNW at 15-20 knots at Mid-tide and rising.

Super Bowl Sunday morning decided to catch a few waves after the storm that hit Washington DC went out to sea. Very cold morning at about 22 degrees when I pulled up to surf. Before jumping in I checked the spot and it was a nice sand bar spitting out a few shoulder high empty barrels for takers willing to drop in at a very shallow sand bar. I think the sandbar was about knee deep at best (check one of the photos of a surfing standing included for reference). Surfed for about an hour and a half then shot a few quick shots before heading to a superbowl party. The next storm will wash away this bar, will have to search for the next one that appears.

    Southwestern RI October 25th, 2009

October 25th Surf Session Summary: Southwestern, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 9:00am

Swell was 8.3 feet at 9.0 seconds from the S (Bouy 44017). Wind was WNW at 5-7 knots at Mid-tide and rising.

When I pulled up to the spot it was still very dark and only a few fisherman were hanging around their cars getting organized to do some surf casting. I walked over the dunes and the calm and silence was almost overwhelming. I couldn't even hear the waves breaking and there was virtually no wind at all. I walked down to the water's edge to try and see the white water out in the darkness and could see some waves breaking way outside since it was dead low. Walked back and grabbed my board and suited up. Just before first light I started the paddle out with a friend and getting to the outside was fairly easy even though it was low tide. Once outside we waited for the sets and as usual they were bigger than we expected. Surfed for about 4 hours and caught too many waves to count. The wave lined up pretty well even though it appeared to be a straight south swell. Once the tide started to fill in and the swell started to drop I caught one last wave in. Exhausted, I went up to the "Mist" and grabbed a burrito and then came back and shot these pictures. The lighting wasn't the best but some of the guys got a few of the leftover waves before the West wind got on it. Enjoy!

Long Beach October 10th, 2009

Long Beach Part 2

Long Beach Part 3

October 10th Surf Session Summary: Long Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Swell was 4.2 feet at 8.3 seconds from the S (Bouy 44025). Wind was WNW at 12-18 knots at high tide and rising.

I got in the water around 10:00am and the wind was blowing strong from the WNW and the waves were a little disorganized. Conditions improved as the wind turned N and the waves started to line up a little better. Surfed for a while and then grabbed my gear and shot these pictures. As you can see the guys have this spot wired and were tearing up the wave faces. It was a very fast wave and the best made it look very easy. Enjoy!

Lido Beach Part 1: August 29th, 2009

Lido Beach Part 2

August 29th (Hurricane Danny) Surf Session Summary: Lido Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:30am

Swell was 8.9 feet at 10.2 seconds from the SE (Bouy 44025). Wind was WNW at 8-12 knots at low tide and dropping.

The local crew have got this spot wired. On every way they pull into the barrel. Some make it out but some don't. Makes for great pictures. Enjoy!

The K's August 23, 2009

August 23rd (Hurricane Bill) Surf Session Summary: K38's, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 7:00am

Swell was 12.5 feet at 14.8 seconds from the SSE (Bouy 44014). Wind was NW at 5-8 knots at low tide and rising.

After checking Point Judith and seeing it was washed out with white water I shot over to the K's to check out the conditions. The first thing I saw as I reached the top of the sand dune was the break wall being breached by a very large set. I ran down to the sand and saw that the waves were easily overhead plus and clean with dead off shore winds. Hurricane Bill was serving up it's best shot. I ran back to the car and grabbed a board and proceeded to work my way out across the cobblestones and grimacing with each step (not into the booty thing). Paddled way outside and to my surprise the first set wave I took was a right and it walled up 15 yards ahead of me and I rode it all the way to shore. Surfed here for about 3 hours until the swell started to fade and the winds turned west. You can see in the pictures the west wind on the wave faces. Got some great shots of different kinds of water craft and varied surfer abilities. I really like how the surfer on the red fish just owned the place. Check out all the pictures and enjoy. Aloha

    Little Rincon August 23, 2009

August 23rd (Hurricane Bill) Surf Session Summary: Little Rincon, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Swell was 6.6 feet at 14.8 seconds from the SSE (Bouy 44014). Wind was SW at 7kts. High Tide and dropping.

The swell was dropping fast and coming in more from the east so these are the last few waves the local crew got before the swell faded entirely at LR's. Check out some of the shots where the guys are surfing right by the rocks. Pretty cool. Enjoy!

    Point Judith August 23, 2009

August 23rd (Hurricane Bill) Surf Session Summary: Point Judith, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 7:00am

Swell was 12.5 feet at 14.8 seconds from the SSE (Bouy 44014). Wind was NW at 5-8kts. Low Tide and rising.

When I pulled into the parking lot at the lighthouse you could hear the waves hitting the rocks. I planned to jump in here and ride the incoming tide, but I grabbed my camera to shoot a very few quick shots. As you can see there were only 2 guys out and the swell was sweeping up the point creating a lot of white water stretching from the cliffs out to the middle of the bay. The waves were pretty large but not as big as I expected. After studying the white water for a time I decided to make a quick run over to the K's to see if that was a little more organized.

    Monahans Dock August 23, 2009

August 23rd (Hurricane Bill) Surf Session Summary: Monahans Dock, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Swell was 6.6 feet at 14.8 seconds from the SSE (Bouy 44014). Wind was SW at 7kts. High Tide and dropping.

This was a little different angle that you generally won't see. I shot the lefts as the waves came in. I was positioned up the point at Little Rincons and looked back towards the dock to get these shots. This angle really shows you the power of the wave as it hits the rocks and stands up. I didn't get many pictures but still cool to see the clear water pushing in towards the shore.

Conant Ave. RI August 23, 2009

August 23rd (Hurricane Bill) Surf Session Summary: Conant Avenue, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 1:00pm

Swell was 5.9 feet at 14.8 seconds from the SE (Bouy 44014). Wind was SW at 7kts. High Tide and dropping.

This is a true Malibu type wave. Enjoy!

    Gilgo July 31, 2009

July 31st Surf Session Summary: Gilgo Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Swell was 5.5 feet at 8.0 seconds from the SSE (Bouy 44025). Wind was NNW at 10kts. Low-Tide and rising.

This was a very mellow day to surf. Big fat flat waves would roll in from the South and offer up a lot of rights and aa few lefts. I paddle out and surfed for about 3 hours and since the wave was so flat a longboard was the preferred stick. These pictures were taken while I was out surfing by a friend. Enjoy!

July 25th Surf Session Summary: Gilgo Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 9:00am

Swell was 4.5 feet at 8.0 seconds from the SE (Bouy 44025). Wind was SW at about 6kts. High-Tide and dropping.

I Surfed earlier at low tide and then when the competition started I shot these pictures. The tide was a little too high for the competition but some of the guys caught some decent waves. A good time was had by all.

    Point Judith July 24 2009

July 24th Surf Session Summary: Point Judith, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 9:30am

Swell was 10.1 feet at 8.5 seconds from the ESE (Bouy 44025). Wind was NNW at a stiff 16kts. Mid-Tide and rising.

Very big seas this day. I got there at dead low very early in the morning and the set waves were cracking way outside and sweeping down the point. Wanted to pull out the fish but it was obvious I needed a bigger board. There was no one out so I went to the K's because the wind was out of the northeast. Checked between the houses and it was head high and pure glass. Grabbed my board and surfed for about 1hour and a half until the wind clocked around to the west and started blowing at about 15 to 20 knots. Had an awsome sesh at the K's so I jumped out and shot over to the lighthouse. Sure enough as I pulled into the lot it was cleaner but the wind was very strong. paddled out and caught a few quick sets sweeping way down to Pilgrim Ave. Then the wind picked up even more and pushed the swell down. I paddled in over the rocks and walked back to the lot, grabbed my camera and shot a few of the pictures. Enjoy!

    Ventnor Pier July 14th 2009

July 14th Surf Session Summary: Ventnor Pier, NJ

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Swell was 2.3 feet at 7.2 seconds from the S (Bouy 44025). Wind was E at about 9kts. Low-Tide and rising.

Here are some shots of the locals just trying to stay in shape on a wind wave. It was a warm summer day and a lot of people just got in the water to cool off. If they caught a wave it was a bonus. Check out the 2 girls just hacking the heck out these small waves. Impressive. They are fearless in big surf. I surfed with them last year during a hurricane swell and they were getting covered on almost every wave. Aloha!!!

    Ventnor Pier July 15th 2009

July 15th Surf Session Summary: Ventnor Pier, NJ

Morning Surf Statistics: 10:00am

Swell was 1.9 feet at 8.1seconds from the S (Bouy 44025). Wind was NE at about 8kts. Low-Tide and rising.

I got to Ventnor about 9:00 am before the winds turned on shore and surfed the wind wave for a while then shot these pictures. The most impressive thing is the girl ripping on the smallest of waves. She is a surfing competitor on the east coast along with her other friend in the pictures not wearing the wetsuit. I would say watch this rising star. She has absolute talent. I am going back in the fall during a good hurricane swell and shoot some pictures of her and her friend on a decent wave. Should be awesome.

    Gilgo July 12th 2009

July 12th Surf Session Summary: Gilgo Beach, NY

Afternoon Surf Statistics: 6:00pm

Swell was 3.3 feet at 6.7 seconds from the S (Bouy 44025). Wind was SSW at about 9.7kts. Low-Tide and rising

I got to Gilgo about 5:30 and the winds were blowing hard out of the west. I arrived at dead low and was anticipating the evening glass off after the land convection would cease and the winds would calm. I shot these pictures while waiting for the wind to die. Sure enough by 7pm the winds calmed and the ocean glassed off. But, by that time the wind wave had dropped in size and the incoming tide made the waves even smaller. I paddle out and caught my share of waves and enjoyed the summer sunset. Water temp was balmy.

    Gilgo June 9th 2009

June 9th Surf Session Summary: Gilgo Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 1:00pm

Swell was 3.4 feet at 7.2 seconds from the SE (Bouy 44025). Wind was West at about 12mph. Mid-Tide dropping to low tide.

When I first got to Gilgo the winds were North and off shore making for clean wave conditions. I surfed for about 2 hours as the tide dropped and the wind changed direction to the west. Pretty good session.

Afternoon Surf Statistics: 1:00pm

Swell was 8.2 feet at 11.4 seconds from the SE (Bouy 44017), Wind wave was 7.5 feet at 6.2 seconds from the SW. The air Tempature at 51 degrees with strong WNW winds at 24mph and low tide at 10:30am.

It's Mohahans.............enough said.

    Little Rincon April 4th 2009

April 4th Surf Session Summary: Little Rincon, RI

Afternoon Surf Statistics: 1:00pm

Swell was 8.2 feet at 11.4 seconds from the SE (Bouy 44017), Wind wave was 7.5 feet at 6.2 seconds from the SW. The air Tempature at 51 degrees with strong WNW winds at 24mph and low tide at 10:30am.

The WNW winds were holding the faces up on the overhead sets so the guys were able to tuck under the lip on some of the set waves. Only one casualty ended up on the rocks and paid the price. Board repairs that night. I paddled out at Monahans and worked my way over to the point. Some of the set waves were swinging wide of the point and guys were surfing past me to the parking lot shore. LR is fun because you have to comitt on the take-off or your risking a beating on the rocks. I worked my way to the point and waited for the guys to get their waves and then proceeded to pick one off myself. I paddled into a set wave and the cool thing about LR is you have to make an exagerated drop in with a sharp angle down the point. Once in the wave walls up and you are off. Very good head high surf. Stayed in about an hour and got out with sore arms. I then took photos of the guys tearing the place up. The crew has this place wired as you can see by the shots. Enjoy!

Point Judith Lighthouse April 4th 2009

April 4th Surf Session Summary: Point Judith Lighthouse, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 10:00am

Swell was 7.9 feet at 9.1seconds from the SE (Bouy 44017), Wind wave was 5.9 feet at 6.7 seconds from the SSW. The air Tempature at 51 degrees with moderate WNW winds at 16mph and low tide at 10:30am.

My friend and I got to PJ at about 7:00am and it was mid-tide with the tide going out. You could hear the thump of the waves as they broke without even seeing the ocean as we walked to the edge of the cliff. There was one guy out way outside at the point, The wind was pretty strong and he was having a bit of a challenge catching the set waves which were overhead (some double OH). Looked like the best entry point for today would be at the point between the 2 peaks. Suited up and proceeded to paddle out between sets. Stopped paddling were I thought the set waves were peaking but to my surpise a very large set came marching in. I was a bit too far inside and took one on the head right in the impact zone. I got pushed so deep into the darkness that it took a while to emerge. Once at daylight the next wave pounded me down again even deeper. Well, I took two more and finally got a chance to paddle outside. Sat there a while to catch my breath and worked on picking off a set wave. The North wind was very intense especially when the wave walled up but I finally caught one a rode it almost to the next peak down by Pilgrim. It turned out to be a challenging surf session with the strong North wind which also made the wave quite flat as you can see from the pictures. I mostly worked the secondary peak near the cliffs to try and avoid some of the wind. We got out after about 3 hours and took some pictures. I then went down to Little Rincon to surf the point with less wind.

Point Judith Lighthouse March 30th 2009

March 30th Surf Session Summary: Point Judith Lighthouse, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:30am

Swell was 6.6 feet at 10.0 seconds (Bouy 44017). The air Tempature at 48 degrees with light W winds at 8mph and high tide at 11:30.

When I pulled into the lot there were only a 3 cars and it was dead high tide. I took a quick look at the point and saw that there was plenty of wave energy even though the wave was currently flat from the tide. I snapped a couple of quick pictures threw on my wetsuit, grabbed my longboard and paddle out to the point. I caught a few waves but was really waiting for the tide to drop. About 30 minutes later I paddle up the point to the parking lot and jumped on a set wave sweeping wide. Since the tide was still pretty high I was able to make all the racey sections down the line all the way past the Pilgrim Avenue crew before I kicked out. Took me about 15 minutes to paddle all the way back to the boil and at that point a seal had shown up to watch the action. Caught a few more waves before the front moved through and the North wind made the drop impossible. So I took a wave in close to the cliffs by Pilgrim and surfed there for about 20 minutes until the wind layed down. Now the waves on the outside sets were groomed to perfection and the Peak walled up real nice. I surfed the peak for a good long time all by myself until my arms were ready to fall off. Jumped out after a 3 hour sesh and looked back to see empty glass peaks firing with not a soul out. Had an afternoon commttment so picture taking up the coast would have to wait. Photos aren't great but the surfing was.

A shout out to Tom the graphic designer surfing his 6'7" fish along the cliffs. E-mail me next time you plan to hit the lighthouse. Cheers

    Giglo March 21th 2009

March 21th Surf Session Summary: Giglo Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 10:00am

Wind Swell was 4.3 feet at 8.2 seconds (Bouy 44025). The air Tempature at 41 degrees with NW winds at 11mph and high tide at 6:00am.

Surfed the dropping at first light even though the tide was a little bit high. The waves were lining up from the south giving the local crew an opportunity to jump on some rights. We surfed all morning and enjoyed the warmth the sunny morning provided. It was nice to walk back to the car not having to climb over snow banks. When I shot these pictures it was almost low tide so most of the riders were drivng to the shoulder once the made the drop.

    Lido Beach March 21th 2009

March 21th Surf Session Summary: Lido Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Wind Swell was 4.1 feet at 8.0 seconds (Bouy 44025). The air Tempature at 45 degrees with WNW winds at 14mph and high tide at 6:00am.

When I got to Lido the wave was working real well and you can see from the pictures that the local crew jumped on quite a few rights. Nice rides for a wind wave. At this point there was a little more west in the wind which kept the wave faces open a little better than at Gilgo.

    Long Beach March 21th 2009

March 21th Surf Session Summary: Long Beach, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 12:00am

Wind Swell was 4.3 feet at 8.2 seconds (Bouy 44025). The air Tempature at 45 degrees with SW winds at 10mph and high tide at 6:00am.

The wind had shifted to the southwest and it was now low tide but a few remnant waves were to be had. Kevin was out and I caught a few pictures of him on a couple of good waves.

Giglo Fire Scene 1_24_09

Gilgo January 24th 2009

January 24th Surf Session Summary: Gilgo, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 9:00am

A wind swell at 4.9 feet at 8.3 seconds (Bouy 44017). The air Tempature at 35 degrees with strong NW winds and 16mph with gusts up to 26mph per the Farmingdale Airport. Water tempature was 35.1 degrees. Low tide was 12:30pm.

As I entered the roundabout at the Jones Beach Pencil it became apparent that the wind was howling from the NW with the beach grass and brush leaning over from the intense gusts. This could be a challenging surf sesh to say the least.

I entered the parking lot and started to get into my wetsuit while my dog Splash ran around outside the car in the snow. The tide was dropping as we paddled out and I decided to go east of the peak and try to pick off some rights while most others worked the left. As you paddled into the wave the spray blinded you so you just closed your eyes and hoped your pop-up would land you on the board. Once up and heading right the strong NW wind kept the wave face open and pushed you along. I caught quite a few long rides and then headed in when the wind picked up making surfing nearly impossible. I walked back to the car with my feet numb from the cold and poured hot water in my wetsuit to cut the chill. Once I was changed I headed back to the beach with Splash.

I walked over the dunes and over to some people who had started a fire. I stood by the fire to keep warm in the howling wind and captured a few pictures before the wind and tide destroyed what was left of the waves. Enjoy!

    Gilgo January 19th 2009

January 19th Surf Session Summary: Gilgo, NY

Morning Surf Statistics: 8:00am

Small wind swell at 3.1 feet at 8.3 seconds (Bouy 44025). Air Tempature 28 degrees with very light N winds to calm. About 3 inches of fresh powder had fallen overnight. Low tide was 8:30am.

Driving down Ocean Parkway there was about 2 inches of snow on the road which had been plowed sometime that night. Pulled into the parking lot and proceeded to push my way through the snow up over the sand dunes. At first sight the waves looked barely surfable so I shot off a couple of pictures while some of the local crew showed up. I went back got my Long Board and paddled out with some friends. The wave was weak but so clean it made for some fun rides. The wave direction was coming straight from the south opening up both rights and lefts off the peak. Caught a bunch of fun waves and then paddled in about 1 hour and 1/2 later. I grabbed my camera in hopes of catching a few pictures before the wave disappeared with the incoming tide.

Mike Becker who is the founder of Nature Shapes surfboards and the primary shaper showed up with one of his boards and I captured a few shots of him on some small waves (Check out pics 3979, 3995, 4091). He also has an new surf shop, go check it out. Then Trent came over the dunes with a brand new Skip Fry fish twin fin (6'9" and about 2 3/4 inches thick). He caught a bunch of fun waves and back-doored the peak a few times nearly tucking under the lip (pics 3962, 4056, 4225, 4242). Sorry for the poor image quality, the lighting was real flat. Back to snowboarding until the next swell. Aloha Alan

K38 and K30 November 7th 2008

November 7th Surf Session Summary: K38 & K39, RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 7:00am

Ground swell at 5.9 feet at 10 seconds (Bouy 44017). Swell direction SE. Station LDLC3 Air Temp 57.9 degrees and Wind NNE at 9.9 knots.

Pulled up to the break at about 6:30am and quickly jumped out of my car to check the surf. As I came over the top of the sand dune I looked out at 39's and 1 person was out. There was a slight mist hanging low across the water which was absolute glass. The peak was showing at just overhead and reeling towards shore. Walked back to the car and Bill the sculpter pulled up and was waxing his board. I put my wet suit on and started the walk down the shore over the cobblestone rocks. I waited for a calm spot and walked a ways out because it was low tide. As I paddled out I watched one of the longboarders take a set wave in. While the wave had some decent size it did not have a lot of power. The pocket seemed to peel and last forever. I finally got outside and waited for the set wave to show on the break water. I took the 3rd wave in the set fairly deep to generate energy. I made the drop and cranked around the white water ahead of me. I hit the lip dug in a cutback and repeated for about 4 times before kicking out at the end of the wave. I surfed for about 5 1/2 hours as the swell continued to back off. At that point I took the last wave to shore and started shooting pictures of the remaining swell. Enjoy the photos. Aloha Alan

Point Judith Light House October 27th 2008

October 27th Surf Session Summary: Point Judith RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Ground swell at 6.9 feet at 10 seconds (Bouy 44017). Wind WSW 4kt. Water temp 59.5 degrees. Air temp 63 degrees.

Solid ground swell conditions resulting from a low which ran along a cold front up the east coast. The swell had come down in size a lot since the morning session and these guys were taking advantage of the last bit of swell on the shortboards at the lighthouse point. At this point the wind had picked up from the southwest giving a little texture to the wave. As you can see there were still some fun rides to be had.

Pilgrim Ave October 27th 2008

October 27th Surf Session Summary: Point Judith RI

Morning Surf Statistics: 11:00am

Ground swell at 6.9 feet at 10 seconds (Bouy 44017). Wind WSW 4kt. Water temp 59.5 degrees. Air temp 63 degrees.

Solid ground swell conditions resulting from a low which ran along a cold front up the east coast. The swell was much smaller at this point giving some of the less experienced longboarders a chance to practice. Very clean conditions because the cliff blocked the winds coming from the southwest.

Lido Beach Monday October 20th 2008

The local crew ripped it up taking ultra late drops and pulling into nearly standup barrels. You will love the shots.

October 20th Surf Session Summary: Lido Beach NY

Afternoon Surf Statistics: 2:00pm

Long period ground swell at 7.9 feet at 13.8 seconds (Bouy 44025)

Epic ground swell conditions resulted from a near tropical low pressure that organized off the northeast coast.

When I finnally moved east to Lido I was quite impressed by the quality of the wave and the riders. The outside sandbar at west end was clearly showing and you can see it in some of the shots I took in V1. The wave was standing up really fast and theses guys just committed to the wave resulting in some very good late drop photos. The wind was lighter and the wave faces were very clean. It was about 2 hours after high tide and the tide was going out so the waves were getting hollow and more barrels were the result. Check out the later versions.

Long Beach Monday October 20th 2008

October 20th Surf Session Summary: Long Beach NY

Afternoon Surf Statistics: 12:00pm

Long period ground swell at 8.2 feet at 14.8 seconds (Bouy 44025)

Epic ground swell conditions resulted from a near tropical low pressure that organized off the northeast coast. I got in the water in town about 10am and the swell energy was electric. An easy paddle out between sets and I didn't realize until I was in the water these waves were fast and standing up as soon as they hit the sandbar. You had to be quick on the pop-up and turn immediately or you would not make it. A lot of waves went by but the crew was very selective in their wave selection. The board of choice for this day was about a 6' to 6' 6" thruster. Saw a few longboards but if they didn't make the initial top turn they were crushed. Wind lightened up as the sesh went on and the waves got cleaner. Went in around noon, grabed my camera and started shooting pics. Hope you like the shots.

    Long Beach Sept 24th 2008

September 24th Surf Session Summary: Long Beach NY

Afternoon Surf Statistics: Short period wind swell at 4.3 feet at 8.3 seconds (Bouy 44025)

This swell was the result of a low pressure moving along a front just off the eastern seaboard. The wind was fairly stong as you can see from the pictures blowing at about 17.5 knots out of the east north east. Pretty strong east rip with the swell filling in from the east south east. Those who caught the set waves got good long rides as the waves peeled west off the jetty. It was a sunny yet windy day.

    Gilgo Sept 8th 2008

September 8th Surf Session Summary: Gilgo NY

Afternoon Surf Statistics:

Long period ground swell at 5 feet at 10 seconds (Bouy 44025)

This swell was filling in from Hurricane Ike and some remnants from Tropical Storm Hana. Winds were directly off shore at NNW and fairly light. I shot the pictures at waters edge and the local crew proceded to rip it up. Took a bunch of great shots then grabbed my 6'0" fish and gave it a try. With the beautful bright sun, off shore winds and perfect surf who could ask for more.

    Monahans Dock Sept 7th 2008

September 7th Surf Session Summary: Monahans Dock RI

Afternoon Surf Statistics:

Long period ground swell fading at 5.1 feet at 10 seconds (Bouy 44017)

The swell from tropical storm Hana was fading fast by early afternoon but the local crew was still out and on it. Tide was quite high but going out and the winds from the west were very strong but you wouldn't know it from the surf sesh the guys were having. The houses and trees block all the wind. Grabbed a clam cake at Monahan's Snack Shack and headed out to Matunuck.

Point Judith Mid Morn Sept 7th 2008

September 7th Surf Session Summary: Point Judith RI

Am Surf Statistics:

Long period ground swell at 9.8 feet at 11.4 seconds (Bouy 44017)

light NW winds creating perfect conditions at the lighthouse. There was a heavy mist hanging in the air from the set waves breaking making for less than ideal shooting conditions. Just a few guys out at the end of the point. Bigger sets were sweeping past the point and peeling north up the coast. I quickly shot a few pics, grabbed my board and paddled out. Easy paddle out, turned and took the first wave that swept wide and rode to Pilgrim. A very flat wave but some racey sections as the wave reformed down the line.

Mid Morning Surf Statistics: 9:00am

Ground swell at 8.2 feet at 12.1 seconds SSE (Bouy 44017)

Wind picked up from the west quite strongly with white caps visible. Still the largest and cleanest waves were swinging wide of the point and reeling up the coast. I have limited shots from this angle and will have to move up to Pilgrim Avenue to capture the action next time.

Long Beach Hot Shots August 26th 2008

August 26th Surf Session Summary: Long Beach

Swell 2.3 feet at 11 seconds.

Light off-shore winds, North at about 5-8mph.

Local crew was very pumped for any waves since August has been a bad month for swell activity. All shots were taken at the water line and it was mid tide coming up to high tide during the session. Quote from Joe Enrico: " There are just a few set waves every few minutes so you have to get on it when they come in; Some have some strength while others are a little mushy."

Gilgo Shots August 26th 2008

August 26th Surf Session Summary: Gilgo

Winds were off shore and conditions were very clean as you can see from the photos. Mostly the local crew on their long-boards catching the long period ground swell as it came in. 1 SUP rider in the mix also catching his fair share of waves. Wave did not appear to have as much punch as the town waves even though the tide had dropped since shooting sesh in town earlier. Much Mahalo to gate attendant who let me park and shoot without the $20 parking fee. Next photo session I will get at the waters edge to enhance the picture quality.

Cape May Shots August 26th 2008

August 21th Surf Session Summary: Cape May Cove

Long period ground swell swept into the bay from the north east winds that went off shore the day before. There was a light north wind cleaning up the wave faces. Although quite small conditions all were having a lot of fun. The SUP's were getting a little practice in as you can see from the pics. The kid on the SUP and Takayama long board has a real smooth effortless old school style. Classic summer conditions at the Cove with expectations of a great fall wave season.

Tobay Shots August 26th 2008

August 26th Surf Session Summary: Tobay

Real mellow wave here with corduroy sets arriving at about 10 minute intervals. Local boys milking each wave for all its worth. Looked like some fun waves. Shots taken from up high on the dunes next to the road. Kept car running.
