West Side January 12, 2010 Part II January 12 Surf Session Summary: West Side Morning Surf Statistics: 7:00am Swell was 11.5 feet at 14.0 seconds from the NW (Bouy 51201, Waimea Bay). Wind was NE at 5-10 knots. This was a classic day of surfing with set waves breaking way outside. Those with big guns like the one in the photo caught most of the set waves. There were all types of surfers and surfboards in the water that day. We surfed about 4 hours and crashed on the beach. The swell continued to pump all day and the wind stayed off shore. Very clean conditions with the water temperature about 72 with mid day air temperature about 80. Great day of surfing. |

Waimea Bay January 11, 2010 "Big Monday" Waimea Bay January 11, 2010, II "Big Monday" anuary 11 Surf Session Summary: Waimea Bay Morning Surf Statistics: 7:30am Swell was 18.5 feet at 19.0 seconds from the NW (Bouy 51201, Waimea Bay). Wind was blowing down the valley from the East. As we were driving through the pineapple farms the mist was heavy and low from the large surf pounding on the shore all day. As we got closer to Kam highway we could see outside Avalanche and breaking and probably the tow in guys were on it. Driving past Lani's the high tide during the night swept across the road leaving debris all over. Once in Waimea Valley it was very calm with a light breeze coming through the notch. I set up my equipment and started shooting pictures with about 12 guys out. We left before the epic close out which made the lifeguards jump into action and was the talk of the North Shore for the whole week. |

Wiamea Bay Close Out on January 11th. I stopped taking photos of the Bay around 11am and we went to surf the West Side. When we were leaving the lifeguard warned the groms paddling out in the lineup that they had limited guard coverage. Everyone continued to paddle out and the line up got very crowded with experienced surfers and inexperienced surfers. This wall of water broke across the entire entrance to the Bay. Well this set came through and cleaned all the surfers out. Several boards were broken and the ski out in the line up was able to rescue several surfers in trouble. Never underestimate the power of Wiamea Bay.
Note: Big Mahalo to CSK for the picture. |
